Heinrich Lichner

IN der Tanzstunde Op. 64 No. 4

Overview

Heinrich Lichner (1829-1898) was a German composer and organist from Silesia. Working as a church organist and choral conductor in Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland), he composed numerous piano pieces for students. His works are technically accessible yet musically sophisticated, designed to nurture young musicians' emotional development.

"In der Tanzstunde" (At the Dancing Lesson) is the fourth piece from his collection "Kleine Blumen, kleine Blätter" (Little Flowers, Little Leaves), Op. 64. The collection's title comes from a poem by Goethe (1771), and includes charming pieces depicting scenes from childhood, such as "A Little Story," "At the Playground," and "The Merry Rider."

The piece is in G major with a 3/4 time signature. The score bears the expression marking "Tirolienne," referring to a folk dance from the Tyrol region. However, this piece feels more like an elegant Viennese waltz than a rustic folk dance. Begin with confidence following the "risoluto" indication. The left hand holds the first beat as a dotted half note while lightly playing beats two and three. Keep the right hand light, paying attention to the eighth rests. In the middle section, play the triplets evenly and gracefully for the best effect.
