Georg Friedrich Handel

Sarabande and Variation

Overview

This piece is by Handel, one of the great masters of late Baroque alongside Bach. While Bach is called the "Father of Music," Handel is sometimes referred to as the "Mother of Music." Both were born in 1685 in nearby regions of Germany, yet remarkably never met. While Bach devoted himself to church music, Handel moved to England as a young man and flourished in opera and oratorio.

This work is the third movement from the Keyboard Suite No. 4 in D minor, HWV 437 (Suite de pièces, Vol. 2). Handel's keyboard suites include both pieces for his own performance (simplified sketches for improvisation) and educational works. This piece belongs to the latter category, written in an accessible style suitable even for children.

The Sarabande is a courtly dance of Spanish origin, characterized by a slow, stately triple meter. Handel often used this rhythm to evoke a sense of fate or destiny. The structure consists of a 16-bar theme followed by two variations. The theme is chordal; the first variation becomes more melodic, requiring careful voice separation. Avoid playing too monotonously—add expression through dynamics even within repeated chords. Accessible at post-Burgmüller level.

This piece became world-famous through Stanley Kubrick's film Barry Lyndon (1975). Joe Hisaishi's "Nausicaä Requiem" is also said to have been influenced by this work.
